I love all Tim Lott's books. I think he is a great writer. His book can get a bit heavy and depressing. Well, not this one and that is a plus for me at the moment. I have a baby and the least I wanted is to read about violence, sadness, tragedies etc. Therefor, I recommend this book to those who would like to read something that is not super serious. An easy read about a 13 year old boy who finds solutions to his struggles.Tags : How To Be Invisible [Tim Lott] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I picked this book up at a second-hand store in Scotland. I enjoyed it.
I think this book would be great for kids interested in science and especially gifted kids. The story is interesting and difficult words are explained so even the youngest kids can follow the story.
How to be Invisible is a young adult fiction entry into the invisible man/child genre. The narrator and main character as well as the invisible one of this tale is a 13 year old boy named Strato. He formerly lived a happy school life in an advanced school in London, however at his mother's insistence due to issues in her relationship with his father, the family has moved away from London to a small English town called Hedgecombe-upon-Dray. In this town it's hard to make friends at school if you're smart, also throw in the fact your the only dark skinned kid in the school and other than one of your teachers, the only dark skinned person in the entire town. One day while truanting from school and visiting second hand book stores, he goes down an alleyway that he hadn't noticed before. At the end is a bookstore that has no customers and at first seemingly no staff. When he follows signs down a few levels he encounters the owner who gives him a book. Eager to escape the place he takes it, when he gets home he notices it has no writing in it and goes to throw it away, but notices some text in the mirror when he is putting it in the bin. However he can't see it when looking at it, he eventually stumbles on the fact that if he runs into the mirror holding the book he will turn completely invisible.
The tale is more about this thirteen year old dealing with issues such as his parents having relationship issues that look like they might split up, dealing with a bully, not trusting other kids, dealing with a teacher who signals him out and embarrasses him because he isn't acting smart when Strato thinks doing so will make his unpopular and bully victim problems worse with the other kids.
From the what does he get up to when invisible factor, Strato does do a few things but not the obvious stuff a 13 year old would probably do. The best of what he does is with the abusive mother of a fellow student. Mostly though he just uses his power to eavesdrop. Which may be a bit disappointing for fans of the invisible man genre. Those fans might also be disappointed that this novel takes the lazy way out of whatever clothes he's wearing, his phone and anything else he's holding turns invisible too. There's no worrying about half digested food being visible or anything like this.
Strato also goes on a few lengthy dialogue rants about atoms, dark matter and things like this that probably aren't going to be that interesting to most readers. It's still a book though that fans of this genre will want to check out. If you're after other YP novel invisible teen fiction you might want to check out Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements, Fade byRobert Cormier or My Invisible Sister by Beatrice Colin .
A great read, with a touching story line and inspiration. How To Be Invisible was wonderful, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a calming read.
