This is a delightful book. I have owned the paper version, listened to the Audible version, and I most recently read it to my daughter from the Kindle.

This is the tale of a young magician's apprentice whose mentor is killed by an assassin just as he is summoning a demon. The encounter leaves the assassin and the magician dead, and the apprentice finds himself alone with the demon. But it turns out that "Demon" is short for "dimension-traveler" and the demon is a hard-drinking, tough-as-nails being known as a Pervect who regularly engaged in practical jokes with the magician (who was an old friend). This sets the scene for a story that is both hilarious and engaging as the apprentice and the demon work together to foul a universe-threatening plot that was set in motion with the assassination, while also trying to reverse the effects of the magician's final practical joke.

The book was not originally intended for children, but it is nonetheless largely family-friendly, with the exception of one joke about incest made by the villain near the end of the story, a tendency of one hero to drink wine by the bucket-full, the usual swords-and-sorcery violence (fairly G-rated violence) and some subtle sexual humor. The inappropriate elements are subtle enough that younger children may simply miss the mildly inappropriate elements, and they are not substantially worse than you would find in classic fairy tales. If you are reading it to your child, then you probably want to just skip one sentence in Istvaan's comment where he mentions his sister (as I did).

There are minor imperfections in the text: words that did not port over 100% correct and that were missed in a spell-check because they are English words that were simply the wrong words. But there are not so many as to make the Kindle experience unenjoyable.

When I bought the Kindle version of the book, it came with an upgrade option to add the Audible audio book for a low price. I found the narration to be underwhelming. The narrator choose some very diverse accents. Those accents help to make it clear who the different speakers were, but they often did not make sense in the context of the story, and they were very distracting. Those who enjoy good Audible content might want to steer clear of the Audible version of this book.

I truly love this series of books. I find it difficult to review however because there are some GLARING transcription errors in the eBook conversion. Some truly basic OCR misses that would have been caught just be running spell check. I cannot fault Robert Asprin for that though. that rests squarely on the publisher. So this is truly a 5-star story packaged in a 3-star shell.
I haven't recieved yet. I ordered it for a book exchange. I have the series already.
This was my mother's favorite series as it is mine. My collection is currently making its rounds with my family so safe to say its loved by all.
This is a great book (and series) - I have read it a few times over the years and repeatedly enjoy the book(s). You have to like a somewhat brash character with a quick wit to enjoy these series. The character has a lot of inner thoughts expressed in the book. It is safe for most ages although I don't think that someone younger than 12 years old would get some of the sarcasm that is used in the book. Much of the book is a parody of other books and situations.
The Myth Adventures series is one of my all time favorites. They are hilarious pun focused fantasy novels. The main character also remains relatable despite the fact these are such comedic books. If you want an easy read that makes you smile every time, this is a great choice.
I give 3 stars specifically to the Edition.

I have owned this book in multiple versions of paperback and love the series and intend to continue buying them as released.

That said, whoever is doing their scanning needs to do a better job. I understand that OCR software isn't perfect but whatever they are using to make the Eds here is putting in punctuation not present in the paperbacks, replacing letters with symbols and in general hosing things up. I can forgive a few instances but in this book there are some pages where there are multiple errors that have been introduced on a single page and a large number throughout the book. Myth Conceptions has some as well. The publisher should take a look at the quality of the product that is being produced. A simple spell checker would have at least caught the instances of words with characters replaced by symbols, just shabby work.
I read this and several others of the Myth series books as a teen and thoroughly enjoyed them. I'd read Tolkien, Lewis, Brooks and similar fantasy authors preceding this series and was used to more of the serious, dramatic take on fantasy. When I started reading these Myth books, my eyes were opened to a humorous, light-hearted approach to fantasy and I was completely hooked. Don't get me wrong, I like the serious fantasy books as well but it was a nice change of pace to have comedy and lighter adventure in a genre I already loved.

It's been years since I first read these but I just started re-reading this first of the Myth books and still find it a delightful adventure!
I'm not entirely sure how I got to adulthood without having read a single Robert Asprin book, especially considering that I've virtually decimated the fantasy stock at , but fortunately, that deficit has been corrected.

This book reminds me a bit of Piers Anthony's Xanth (before he got all weird) but with somewhat fewer puns. Very lighthearted, VERY comical, very silly, with a main character who pretty much has no idea what's going on, ever. Allied with the fearsome demon cum magic teacher, he hares off on an adventure to stop his late master's murderer and manages to pick up a posse of strays on the way. (I dare you not to fall in love with Gleep.) It also reminds me of Diana Wynne Jones's Howl books light entertainment, good for all ages, with witty banter for days when you need to keep the stress level to a minimum.

This is not fine literature.

It's better. It's a fun little vacation for your imagination. If you like fantasy - and maybe even if that's not normally your cup of tea - read it. Really. You will smile.
